Now, now, action movies are certainly not everyone’s cup of tea, are they? The thundering violence, the bloodshed, and the heart racing anticipation, the resounding bangs and the hair jumping scenarios are all a little too much for some. But these are the very same reason why millions of people love to watch movies under the action movie genre.

The past decade has seen its share of good, as well as great action movies. Although, I must confess, the action movies churned out now are a lot diverse than what they used to be- they are now based more on the story. The storyline has taken a greater precedence nowadays, and as such the action sequences are more restricted and are not maybe at the same levels of action and violence of the past. Even though many action movie enthusiasts have bemoaned this fact and in turn bemoaned this past decade, there are certain positives that have arisen out of the decade and chief among them is the technological advances that have presented amazing visual effects, thereby making the action movies more compelling and enthralling. So, here is a list of some of the best action movies of the past decade:

1. The Dark Knight

This 2008 released, Christopher Nolan film is a must watch film even if you aren’t into action films at all because this film packs it all- right from the storyline to the action sequences and to the incredible performances. It is truly a masterpiece by Nolan and is lined with great performances, notably from Heath Ledger, as he delivers a performance of a lifetime, which earns him the Oscar.

2. “Kill Bill” Franchise

The Kill Bill films are a must watch for action movie buffs out there. This Quentin Tarantino film packs in a lot of heat and action and is a sure testament to the brilliance of the director. Some amazing fight scenes and the graceful violence essentially capture the vengeance of the character, essayed by Uma Thurman. This film would certainly satisfy even those who claim that action films have long passed its heyday.

3. Taken

A cold blooded story of a retired CIA agent’s quest to find his daughter, kidnapped by human traffickers while on holiday, will surely tick all the boxes of a great action film. Liam Neeson does a great job playing the lead protagonist and the movie is lined with violence and action that will definitely make anyone’s toe curl. Although the sequel to it has disappointed, it must be noted that the high bar of expectation set by this movie was always going to be hard to replicate.

4. The A- Team

This movie received a moderate response when it was released; but what weren’t moderate were its action scenes. This movie definitely packs a great deal of punch.  The movie has great action scenes, is extremely fast paced, is filled with some incredible performances and is the epitome of coolness; these attributes make it a great action movie to watch.

5. Fast Five

The fifth edition of the successful Fast and Furious franchise was the biggest grosser and the most acclaimed of all its editions. The movie has great action scenes that ties up perfectly with a sensible storyline. The cast is also highly impressive, with Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock playing the lead roles. The movie revolves around the heist planned by a group of street racers, led by Diesel, while they also have to be on guard against the highly dangerous federal agent, played by Johnson. The movie is filled with great stunts, gun battle and amazing car racing, making it a must watch one for all high speed action movie aficionado.

6. The Expendables

This movie could act as the poster boy for action movies. The movie is filled with amazing and captivating action throughout- right from the start to the end. The ensemble cast comprises of the bigwigs of the action movie industry – Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Steve Austin, Mickey Rourke, Dolph Lundgren and cameo appearances from Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The movie lives up to the high expectation that arose from such a mouthwatering cast.

7. Transporter

The film, through which Jason Statham shot to fame, is a great action film filled with incredible stunts scenes. The action stunts performed in this film were of the highest order and the fact that Statham performed the fights without ropes and special effects made it a legit action movie that is too good to miss.

8. Death Race

Another of Jason Statham movies, the Death Race is one movie you should not miss if you are a fan of intense violence in action movies. The brutality of the violence in the film is a refreshing sight from all the other movies that try to play it soft. The incredible car races accompanied with the violence is guaranteed to raise your heartbeat.

9. Iron Man

Another movie that has fathered a successful franchise, the Iron Man is a great movie to watch. The unexpected twists and turns, the resounding action sequences, the advanced technological expertise, all make for an entertaining watch. The subtle nuances of the film makes you want to watch it all over again.

10. The Avengers

When we talk about technologically advanced films, it is hard to leave the The Avengers out. The action sequences in this movie can be termed as nothing short of incredible. This movie wooed and wowed everyone and anyone on its road to becoming the highest grosser of all time; watch this movie one time and you will be able to appreciate how and why it has achieved such heights.

11. 300

No list of Great Action Movies is complete without this magnum opus. The movie is spellbounding tale of the 300 brave Spartans who dared fight against the vast Persian army. The high-end graphics used in this film is a joy to watch, as is the incredible performances of the entire cast. It was a highly acclaimed and a highly successful movie.
