The word torrent has become synonymous with illegal internet activities but in the whole spectrum of internet downloading it is an incredibly efficient way to share files and perfectly legal. It just so happened that early adopters of this new tool used it to share copyright protected content which in turn is probably the reason torrents took off in the first place.
